I have a VNese girlfriend. She's terrific in all other ways, but she's a bit obsessed with good health, which can be a pain in the ass. We're at the dreaded stage where she's imposing limits on how many beers I can drink in a day, week, etc. She's pushing really hard for a limit of 2 beers per session. I know that most Tays with Viet girlfriends or wives have gone through this, and it's a fairly common point of contention. But what I don't know is how others have effectively dealt with it. She's been pretty stubborn about it thus far. Will she relax on this point eventually, or do I have to argue it again and again? I like to have 4-5 beers. Not every day, but maybe once a week. If I ignore her, is it a deal breaker? What to do? All advice appreciated...
I'm looking for decent Japanese food in Hanoi. I lived in Japan for more than 10 years, so I guess I'm a bit fussy. Most of what I've had in Hanoi has been over-priced and heavy handed. My benchmark is The Sushi Bar in HCM, which I thought was very good for the price.
I had an advertisement on new Hanoian. I looked for a boyfriend (to hang out with this Xmas and Lunar new year festaval) and then I dated with a brown teeth guy. After 3 times dating he said we are to difference as persons and no want meet me anymore. I don't want to post an advertisement but I want to have a new boyfriend, what should I do?
I've seen a lot of posts be failed/meh'ed. There was usually nothing offensive about them. I don't really understand...Isn't the idea of an online forum to share opinions and hear other people's ideas regardless of whether you agree? Isn't "failing" someone kind of out of line with the spirit of that? It seems rather rude.
Who has worked for Hanoi Academy in Seputra? What are yr experiences? Student-wise, management-wise and so on. What about the students. I could not find any reviews here. Strange as it is a big international school...
Today when I was eating lunch in KFC (an occasional guilty pleasure), a rather chubby guy came up to me and my partner's table dressed in a clean sports tracksuit and trainers - not scruffy or undernourished-looking at all - and intimated to me that he was both deaf and dumb. He was pointing to his mouth and putting his hand out, which is the universal gesticulation of the beggar, although he was making several other gestures which I'm guessing were pertaining to his inability to communicate verbally. I shook my head and started to ignore him, but he wasn't going anywhere, and he started tapping my arm when I looked away, to my great annoyance. Then - and this would have to be the mother of all tactical errors in art of begging - he pulled out a 200,000 dong note and indicated that he w...
As many of you may have already read in the newsletter, changes are about to take place in the Ask A.N.H. section. We will be returning the section to its original purpose as a place to find practical information about life in Hanoi. Our experiment in allowing greater levels of free-flowing discussion to happen here has resulted in many of the very tendencies that we wished to avoid when we explicitly avoided adding a discussion forum to the site. Like so many expat sites around the world, the tone quickly degenerated into ranting and raving about a place that the vast majority of us voluntarily choose to live in. Helping one another overcome the difficulties that Hanoi life can involve gave way to adolescent name calling, escalating flame wars, and the general sense that posting a ...
So just two weeks till kick off, who is gunna win? what do ya reckon? Latest William Hill odds Spain 4/1, Brazil 9/2, England 6/1, Argentina 7/1, Holland 10s, Italy 14s, Germany 14/1, France 16/1, Portugal 22, USA level with Ghana at 80 to 1, South Africa and Australia 125 to 1, let's not forget the Kiwis at 2000/1. Probably biased towards England (English Company), but being honest i think France and Argentina each way might be a good bet.

I'm not looking for comments on whether you are for or against, but rather I'd like to know the law. No, I am not planning a new career and it's not for a "friend" of mine. I've seen a lot of things just recently (maybe related to the "hottie" thread) at hubby's hotel, but when I ask about the legality, I'm told that as long as they show their ID, there is nothing the staff can do. Normally, they don't have this issue, but quite recently it seems to have blossomed into something that is an issue. So, knowing the law may help me when advising staff on how to deal with the issue. I've poked around on the net and found nothing substantial.
The rumour doing the rounds is that the old Bobby Chins restaurant at Hoan Kiem Lake is earmarked as a first McDonalds in the city! Does anyone have any confirmation on this? Can we start a petition against it!
Has anyone else had weird phone calls from Viet Namese males first wanting to speak "inglesh" with you and then offering to have love with you? I am not kidding here, today has the forth such phone call in the last two weeks! Screaming WTF and hanging up has not helped. Is this random calling or what?
After days of tending to a fever-stricken child, I've had lots of time to stare at cartoons with her while catching up on the under-rated art of mindless daydreaming. While traveling a mental path on memories of home, I suddenly recalled the Krispy Kreme drive-thru, which led to a more general wondering of whether or not a drive-thru window (for both bikes and cars) would work in Hanoi. Just curious.
... is TNH's Q&A forum. If you've got a question about life in Hanoi that you think you should pose to someone in the know, here is the place to do it.
