So my toddler son has put up with 2 years of having his privates pinched and grabbed by complete strangers in the street. What's with this?? At first I though it was a way of determining gender (dressing him in blue and brown doesn't seem to be clear enough). I know this odd behaviour has been inflicted on other Western boys too, and have heard rumours that it's some kind of good luck charm. Huh?? Is it only boys who have to go through this indignity, and is it only foreign boys? Please can somebody enlighten me, before the next person who does it gets their own bollocking in return.
First, can anybody link to garbage sorting collecting centers that pay for trash? I often see people digging through trash to take cans and bottles somewhere where it seems they will get paid for them. Where are the biggest locations and what are their names? Second, does anyone know where to dispose of harmful (electronic) trash like batteries, light bulbs, and things that contain chemicals? After reading this question already asked on TNH, I understand how most people sort their trash (or not at all). https://tnhvietnam.xemzi.com/tw/hanoi/aska/answers/qid/1921 I want to create a map with all of the garbage collection sites (addresses, opening hours, how to sort, and costs per material).
I currently live in a place with wooden shutters on the windows. I find it inconvenient to wake up to a dark room and have to open the shutters every morning. Does anyone leave their shutters open ask the time and just rely on glass windows or is this considered unsafe? No neighbours leave their shutters open overnight..
Does anyone know where to get a good ao dai made? I went to some shops on Kim Ma last night with vietnamese collegue and they were in the 1 - 2 million range. Or a plainer one for about 700-800k. There were many Vietnamese in these shops, but this price still seems so expensive to me! Help??
Looking for Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room in Hanoi. I go to a gym I'm happy with, that doesn't have a jacuzzi, sauna or steam room. Occasionally, I want to use a jacuzzi, steam room, and sauna. I understand this means paying a daily free (not being a member). What hotels are reasonable in price about this. I assume these will be in "hotel gyms" that often have these facilities. Thanks.
Where is the large fabric market? It's in a building several floors and at least one level has only fabric. I've been there before, but I don't remember where it is. Does anyone know the name of it and or the street it's on? I know this information has been posted before because I've seen it, but now that I need it I can't find it. I searched ANH using the words: fabric, material, market, shopping, and tailor.
I had a cleaning lady visiting first time in my apartment. And when she was leaving I offered her some food products which the old tenant had left behind (cookies, several type of tea bags, some instat coffee bags = all the backages were opened, but the individual packages were closed/sealed). I think she didn't quite understand what I was trying (she called someone, and after a while she left without taking anything). Should I try to offer those things again to her, but how? Or should I just throw them away (I mean if she is taking it as an insult to offer food products)?
I went to meet a friend for lunch today. As I arrived, he was at the cash register paying, looking a bit green. He saw something seriously unsanitary going on in this medium priced venue, in full public view (plates being scraped, the garnished being preserved, and new food going on the same unwashed plate to a new table). The manager arrived at the cash register. He explained what he saw. Here's the question: She had this look on her face like "yeah, I know exactly what you're talking about" and she immediately got his bill, and gave him back his money for the time he had spent there before my arrival (some VND 145,000). But she didn't give any indication it would never happen again. It kind of just felt like "yeah, we do that here, sorry if you're grossed out, but here...
Is anyone currently living in Ciputra villa (not apartment). Im just wondering how is the house condition, maintenance service, surrounding space and how convenient for you to go on with daily chores (groceries shopping, outdoor activities, neighbours). Really appreciate your shared info.

... is TNH's Q&A forum. If you've got a question about life in Hanoi that you think you should pose to someone in the know, here is the place to do it.
